A roof is the covering on the uppermost part of a building. A roof protects the building and its contents from the effects of weather. Structures that require roofs range from a letter box to a cathedral or stadium, dwellings being the most numerous.

In most countries a roof protects primarily against rain. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, sunlight, cold and wind. Other types of structure, for example, a garden conservatory, might use roofing that protects against cold, wind and rain but admits light. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements.

The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it covers, the available roofing materials and the local traditions of construction and wider concepts of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation.

The elements in the design of a roof are:

The material of a roof may range from banana leaves, wheaten straw or seagrass to lamininated glass, aluminium sheeting and precast concrete. In many parts of the world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing material for centuries.

The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour.

The durability of a roof is a matter of concern because the roof is often the least accessible part of a building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its damage or destruction can have serious effects.

What roof color would look best with a mingled-cream colors small brick home?
Q. Due to hail damage, I am replacing the roof on my twelve-year-old home. My house looks nice, but fairly plain. The trim, garage door and roof all blend. There does not seem to be any definition to make it stand out. Since I must begin with the roof, I thought maybe I could give the exterior of my home a little more personality. I can change everything except the brick color (a light cream color that has other tones in each brick). What roof color, trim and door color would make my house "pop"? I will be using the Tamco architectural asphalt composition shingles. (They are more dimensional looking and the shingles look like more than one color.) I live in the DFW area of Texas... hot, hot, hot weather...

A. Drive around your neighborhood to find color schemes that appeal to you. Bright green may be the now ting, but if you hate green then you won't be happy with it. When you see a house that has the wow factor, then you will be on the right track. Don't stop there though... Take a picture of your house, take it with you to a couple of home improvement centers and then to a couple of smaller high end paint stores. Ask for ideas and opinions from the sales people. You can jot down notes and tell them you want to think about it before making a final decision. Take your time, so that you will be happy with the results. Simple things often make the biggest difference. Edge the sidewalk, prune shrubbery - correctly! Plant flowers. Change out the… [cont.]

What is the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof?
Q. What is the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof in a car?
Asked by Nowye - Tue Mar 23 04:20:10 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's really just a marketing thing. The pop up types (that don't slide) have always been called sunroofs, but the old sliding types that were made of steel were also called sunroofs, just usually sliding sunroofs or something like that. The term moonroof started when the first of these sliding sunroofs were introduced where the sliding panel was no longer steel, but rather made of glass, generally with some sort of retractable shade to block the sun when you didn't want it to come in, like on a hot summer day when you have the AC on. So - moonroof = sliding glass panel with shade sunroof = everything else.

When is roof ventilation necessary, and how is it achieved?
Q. How is it done? How does it fit in with modern airtightness standards? Is it necessary even when there's no airspace in the roof? (E.g. a cathedral ceiling, stuffed with insulation above.) Thanks. So... no attic, no ventilation required?
Asked by RunningBear - Fri Sep 4 09:40:38 2009 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Vents can serve two purposes. In the summer vents provide air circulation and remove much of the heat build up in the attic. In very cold climates in the winter the vents remove moisture that can condense in the attic. The condensed moisture can saturate your insulation and can even form ice in the attic. You also need soffit vents along the eaves of your house that work in concert with the ridge vents or gable vents to provide the necessary circulation patterns for the process to be effective. You can even vent cathedral ceilings if the insulation is installed properly with insulation channels. See the second site below.
