NounSingular roof
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A roof is the covering on the uppermost part of a building. A roof protects the building and its contents from the effects of weather. Structures that require roofs range from a letter box to a cathedral or stadium, dwellings being the most numerous. In most countries a roof protects primarily against rain. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, sunlight, cold and wind. Other types of structure, for example, a garden conservatory, might use roofing that protects against cold, wind and rain but admits light. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it covers, the available roofing materials and the local traditions of construction and wider concepts of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation. The elements in the design of a roof are:
The material of a roof may range from banana leaves, wheaten straw or seagrass to lamininated glass, aluminium sheeting and precast concrete. In many parts of the world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing material for centuries. The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour. The durability of a roof is a matter of concern because the roof is often the least accessible part of a building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its damage or destruction can have serious effects. Someone said I need to remove the roof headling to get at the bolts. How do I remove the roof headling? Asked by Lighthearted - Sat Oct 3 09:41:24 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. To remove the rack you first have to remove all the inside door trim on every door, including the rear hatch. This will loosen the edges of the headliner near the doors. The A pillar and B pillar inside trim will also have to be removed. The sun visors will have to be removed along with the upper windshield trim. Once the headliner is out of the way you will see the nuts holding the rack in place. Be cautious with the long pieces that run from front to back. They are also attached with a very stiff glue and will snap in two very easily. Best to get one end started then run a stiff wire, like a guitar string under the piece to cut the glue loose. Clean out all the old glue before reinstalling the rack. Do not try to reuse it. The walls and roof are dirty and need cleaning. While the structure is plenty sound, I'm wondering how safe it is to walk on the roof. I was wondering if all metal roofs are built strong enough to support a person walking on it. For other types of roofs in colder climates, building codes specify a load capacity to hold up under snow. Here in Houston, such support does not apply. As the roof itself is very light, it doesn't need to be very strong to shed off rain. Asked by anim8er2 - Tue Nov 6 17:42:15 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. i've done a lot of work on metal roofs, and i have only came across 1 that was too thin to walk on. it wasn't that it wouldn't support me either, (230lbs) it just bent, and dented when i walked on it. this just simply made it look ugly... feel a corner or edge if you can find one. if you can bend it easily with your fingers, it's too thin, but if it's quite rigid, and you can't bend it without plyers, it should hold up to your boots! not sure where you are, but where i am, we are starting to get frost. take EXTRA care on those metal roofs during this coming winter season! Answered by D-Rock - Wed Nov 7 03:37:06 2007 How much should I pay a roofing company to have my garage roof repaired?
Q. I have a 2.5 garage. It's in mint condition except for my roof. I need all the shingles replaced and a couple boards replaced (about 2-3 boards need replacing). I also need tips on how to get my estimate lowered. Thanks for all your help! Asked by Danny - Mon Oct 12 11:29:55 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. A 24' X 30' garage is what I would call a 2+1/2 car garage. So about 900 sq. feet of shingles. 9 squares + felt and roof edge. I would say about $850 for materials if you buy them. You can probably find some out of work roofers to install them for $25-$40 per square if you want to risk no insurance. So around $1200 if you go the risky way.If you want a tear off of old shinlges add $300. If you want a reputable roofing company to quote a price. Expect around $1800 - $2200 with tear off included. As for buying the shingles and having a roofing company roof it (labor), that isn't going to happen. All contractors (if they plan to stay in business and make a profit) mark up materials at least 20-30% and some better run companies go up to 40%.… [cont.] Answered by Tedruski - Mon Oct 12 17:04:46 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "roof" Elderly man saved from roof fall
