In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as, etc. . If three or more items are being compared, the corresponding superlative needs to be used instead.

Structure

The structure of a comparative in English consists normally of the positive form of the adjective or adverb, plus the suffix -er, or (in the case of polysyllabic words borrowed from foreign languages) the modifier "more" (or "less"/ "fewer") before the adjective or adverb. The form is usually completed by "than" and the noun which is being compared, e.g. "he is taller than his father is", or "the village is less picturesque than the town nearby". "Than" is used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce the second element of a comparative sentence while the first element expresses the difference ("our new house is larger than the old one"). There is less water in Saudi Arabia than there is in the United States; but however, there are fewer people in Canada than there are in California.

How do you structure a comparative essay?
Q. How do you structure a comparative essay? Like a plan of something? I've got to compare two characters in two different novels. So how would you structure it? Thanks.

A. A lot depends on the thesis statement. If you can come up with a handy thesis statement, that may make organizing the essay easier. For example, if you say "A and B were alike in many ways. They both (whatever) and they both (whatever). Yet they differed as well in three principle ways. (<-- thesis statement). And it was these differences that ended up causing their ultimately different fates. (<-- early clue to conclusion) Then you start like this: One of the principle ways that A differed from B is that A did this and that while B did the opposite. On page 38 we read that A (whatever), whereas on p 76 we see B refusing to do it. Besides the (way the differed in the first paragraph), a second way that A differed from B is that A (wh [cont.]

How do you convert Latin adjectives into the comparative and superlative?
Q. Specifically: small and big. How do you convert those two words into the comparative and the superlative? What is the rule? Where can it be found?
Asked by Cdell - Sun Nov 23 15:02:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. parvus, parva, -um ... small, little minor, -or, -us ... smaller minimus, -a, -um ... smallest, least magnus, magna, -um ... large, great, big major, -or, -us ... larger, greater maximus, -a, -um ... greatest, largest These are irregular in form. They do not follow the ordinary rule. Ordinarily it would be as follows: longus, longa, -um ... long, tall longior, -ior, -ius ... longer, taller longissimus, -a, -um ... longest, tallest Notice the "-ior, -ius" in the comparative and the "-issimus, -a, -um". Thesee are the usual or normal endings. You can find a fuller explanation in any good Latin grammar book.

What kind of jobs can i get with a degree in philosophy/comparative literature?
Q. now I think I pretty much gave up my plan to be a doctor as a result of my abhorrence for any lab-related classes. But i know there isn't much option for my current major right now, which is philosophy and possibly comparative literature as well. Is it even possible to get a decent-paying job with those degrees? Yes, I am planning to enter grad school and further equip myself.

A. Philosophy is a degree you can literally take anywhere, The skills it teaches you are the natural leadership abilities that are in high demand in todays work place (communication, logic, conflict resolution, problem solving, and an ability to adapt to any enviornment). Particularly, philosophy is a good preparation for law school because you deal with ethical as well as metaphysical issues.

Ethnogenesis depends on the production of polity markers. Polity markers are invented and cultivated through a process of differentiation in which boundaries that are blurry to begin with are heightened and reinforced.
