Australia (pronounced /əˈstreɪljə/ ə-STRAYL-yə or /ɒˈstreɪljə/ o-STRAYL-yə, or more formally as /ɔːˈstreɪliə/ aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast.

For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory.

Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, ANZUS, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, South Pacific Forum, and the World Trade Organization.

How is Australia different from the United States?
Q. I am thinking about being a foreign exchange student in Australia. I was just wondering, what do you think is the hardest part being a foreign exchange student? What are the biggest differences between the United States and Australia? Can I still watch the same TV shows there? Are there certain foods over there(like different kinds of snack foods or candy) that I can't get over here and vice verse?

A. The TV is way different, the food is different, the currency is different... Really the only similarity is that English is spoken in both countries

In Australia, what is the difference between the Master of Commerce degrees and the MBA degrees?
Q. I noticed that they offer both of those degrees. The Master of Commerce degrees are awarded by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the respective school for the most part. The MBA is always awarded by the Business School of that school. Both degrees are unbelievably expensive. What is the main difference between these two degrees and how are they regarded? How would employers in the US distinguish between the Master of Commerce from Australia and the MBA from there? It's not an MS degree. They call them "Master of Commerce" and those degrees are in general business, not a particular field such as accounting or finance.

Has anyone in Australia built a house on a basement foundation? I can't find any information on how to do it.
Q. I am planning on building a New England style home in approx. 2 - 3 years and would like a basement foundation. I have just started researching all my building options but am having a hard time finding any relevant information about basements from Australia. I know they aren't common but I didn't think they would be non-existent... Any advice/help would be appreciated.

A. Assuming that you mean a house with a cellar or sub basement / rumpus room type under the main dwelling... Then I would be surprised if you would find any information in general about this type of structure since every situation is different... and has to be designed by a engineer ( 0r Myself )... Structures with special foundations are designed and built by professional Building Contractors in Australia... As each design is completely reliant on the sites position, slope, soil/clay structure, height, loadings , spans etc... Any generalisation of guidelines would be somewhat " inappropriate "...You should talk to a Reputable Builder when you have the site ( land ) chosen...and a basic idea of what you want...in mind.… [cont.]
