A phylogeny of the extant ant subfamilies. *Cerapachyinae is paraphyletic Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae (pronounced /fɔrˈmɪsəˌdiː/), and along with the related wasps and bees, they belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the mid-Cretaceous period between 110 and 130 million years ago and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. Today, more than 12,500 species are classified with upper estimates of about 22,000 species. They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae and a distinctive node-like structure that forms a slender waist. Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies which may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. These larger colonies consist mostly of sterile wingless females forming castes of "workers", "soldiers", or other specialised groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens". The colonies are sometimes described as superorganisms because the ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the colony. Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and certain remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in most ecosystems, and may form 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass. Their success has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves. Their long co-evolution with other species has led to mimetic, commensal, parasitic, and mutualistic relationships. Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study. Many human cultures make use of ants in cuisine, medication and rituals. Some species are valued in their role as biological pest control agents. However, their ability to exploit resources brings ants into conflict with humans, as they can damage crops and invade buildings. Some species, such as the red imported fire ant, are regarded as invasive species, since they have established themselves in new areas where they have been accidentally introduced. GNU Free Documentation License How to stop ants getting inside my home with chalk? Q. Hello. Years ago (l'm talking the 80's) l remember my Nan drawing a line of chalk around the front door or across the pavement to the door to stop the ants going into the house. They could never get over the chalk and would turn away. Being naughty kids we used to draw a circle around the ants and watch them run around in confusion because they couldn't get out!. Anyway, my parents have suddenly been invaded tonight by ants (must be the warm weather in the UK at the mo') and we thought of the chalk thing - but this time it didn't work!. The ants are walking all over the chalk - l think maybe a ingredient that was in chalk years ago has been taken out, or ants are stronger nowadays?!. Anyone know of anything except bug spray that can stop… [cont.] Asked by dizzybee&searanger - Wed Jul 5 19:02:02 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. the asian stores have an insecticide chalk that kills any ant that comes close to it!! my wife is from the phillipinines and only used this until she got used to our spray cans and stuff,, but she still uses the chalk alot many local stores are starting to carry it now Answered by fuzzykjun - Wed Jul 5 23:02:57 2006 how can I rid the ants without hurtin my cats? Q. I have two four months old kittens, and also an ant infestation. Whenever I put the food up for my cats, the ants just invade the bowl and my kitties can't eat. Is there a way I can rid the ants, or at least keep them away from the food without hurting my kittens? I've never had cats before and I don't know what they can or cannot come in contact with. Some people have suggested salt lines. Wouldn't that hurt my kitties if they licked it? Asked by pinkranger_2000 - Fri Apr 7 18:07:46 2006 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments A. First, clean up really well. Don't leave cat food out. Feed them a little twice a day and if they walk away from the food, pick it up and put it in the fridge. Now, find out where they are coming in and see if you can caulk around there. Wash with ordinary liquid dish soap around the place they're coming in and all along trails they've left. They put down a scent trail and you need to get rid of that. Go outside and pour straight liquid dish soap near where they are coming in. You can plant marigolds around the house to discourage ants. Combat disks work really well and your cats will just ignore them. As a last resort. Answered by OiVey - Fri Apr 7 18:18:29 2006 What causes "sugar ants" and how can you get rid of them?
Q. I have those really small ants in my kitchen, we call them "sugar ants". If a crumb gets let on the counter, they are all over it. They don't bite that I know of. Please give me ideas to get rid of them. Thanx Asked by crazynurse069too - Thu May 17 10:25:59 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ants are just attracted to sweets. For ants on the counter top, wipe down the counter top with white undiluted vinegar. To prevent ants from coming into the house, or getting into cupboards, sprinkle dried mint or red pepper where they are entering the house and in the cupboards. If you know where the anthills are, make a mixture of 50 percent borax (sold in laundry aisle of supermarkets) and 50 percent confectioner's sugar and place near anthill. The ants are attracted to the sugar and carry the fatal borax/sugar combination back to the nest to feed the queen and other ants. Soon all ants will be dead. Do not put this mixture where children and pets can ingest it. To get rid of anthills, pour 3 gallons of boiling water down them.
