Australia (pronounced /əˈstreɪljə/ ə-STRAYL-yə or /ɒˈstreɪljə/ o-STRAYL-yə, or more formally as /ɔːˈstreɪliə/ aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast. For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory. Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, ANZUS, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, South Pacific Forum, and the World Trade Organization. It mainly comes down to the fact that we have so many natural resources and that gives us quite a lot of power to control various parts of the world. If we stop digging up uranium then parts of the world would go without electricity. We have a very unique position being the only "western" country in the Asia region, which means we have really strong partnerships and link in Asia (trade agreements, business links, political links etc etc) but also really strong links with Europe and the US. Our position will become increasingly important to the US especially as we enter a new era with China and North Korea, as we are the predominant "western" contact within these regions. We also have a large business sector (most European/American… [cont.] Answered by doodler - Mon Oct 19 00:44:27 2009 Why is Australia's population estimated to reach around 35 million people within 40 years? Q. I heard that Australia's population is projected to grow to around 35 - 40 million people within a period of 40 years or so. My question is, why will it grow to that number? Is it b/c of immigration or are people just having more kids? I am asking as I always hear that Australia is pretty much a desert and incredibly short on water. So would that be a good thing if Australia's population would basically double within this short time frame? Asked by mayerj72 - Tue Sep 22 04:50:07 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's because immigrants are having too many kids. Normal families have 2 or 3 but these people have 5 or 6. So do bogans. People need to realise that we don't have enough room to accommodate. In my state we are already running out of water, soon we'll have to drink out of the toilet. It would be a bad thing.
